Second Edition (June 2009)
by
Michael Baker

Thanks to the support provided by the Dorothy Garske Center, Arizona State parks and REI, VOAz has published a synthesis of many lessons learned about trail building and maintenance in arid lands over more than ten years.

The second edition of this ninety page handbook includes detailed how-to-build-it descriptions and illustrations of the standard elements of trail construction. The book is written for trail builders, crew leaders, trail planners, and land managers with trails responsibilities. It is small enough to take into the field. While many fine trail building guides are already available, The Joy of Trail Work is the first to focus on the special requirements of building sustainable, low-maintenance trails in arid landscapes.

The author's limited command of the facts and the English language were substantially ameliaorated by the following reviewers/editors: Ed Blanchard, Thom Hulen, Carla Olson, Charlie Scully, Mike Snodgrass, and Bruce Weidenhamer.
