Jug Trail Extension at Salome Creek

At the end of a hard days work the team prepares to hike back to the trailhead in anticipation of hot showers and a great potluck at camp. Salome Creek is in the background.

April 7, 2005

Seventeen volunteers put in a long day on the exit route from the bottom of the slot on Salome Creek. The corridor was re-cleared, social trail closures were reinforced, and a variety of tasks undertaken to stabilize previously installed steps, add new ones and improve drainage. The work, made a bit easier by the relatively cool weather, was capped off with hot showers, another great pot-luck dinner built around a pasta course prepared by Conrad. Sunday morning we started with some in-your-face coffee and VOAz's signature French toast (please forgive us for using this politically incorrect name). Then Cathy and Rogil helped everyone fit themselves with a swami harness and it was off for a day of fun in the water.

After loading gear and tools at the trailhead, the long walk down starts (below)

Marge and Cindy spent the day re-clearing the corridor. Much Tamarisk had to be removed to reopen the path out of the creek.

Conrad's crew repaired several structures in the upper reach of the project area. Here Conrad resets a drainage leading water off of the trail. Well, that's the plan.

Ryan and Ted rebuild a step that was being undercut.

"If I don't sink this one, its another frigging eagle!"

Ken's crew worked to improve drainage in the area of the infamous downspout.

Anna looks skyward for inspiration, while Dick thinks about where he might use this nice rock in his garden, and, of great importance, when will he have the opportunity to slip it into Conrad's back pack.

Ken (barely visible) recovering after Aminda, beaming with pride, beans him with a rock
The finished downspout. (Bring it on!!)

Everyone retreated to creek side for the lunch break.

Mike Snodgrass, Howard and Fred (not shown) rebuilt and added more steps.

Mike Galwey, Michael, John and Brian worked on repairing a damaged switchback (built in '04). A staircase was built along the lower leg and the interior face between the legs was armored.

Brian and John set a step in  place.

John and Mike take a break after muscling another large step rock onto the rebuilt trail.

Buckets were used to haul in cobble for armoring the interior of the switchback.
John tests the the final product.

Next to last one out.
